Life#
İbrahim Ethem Efendi was born in Erzurum in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1887/88, İbrahim Ethem began work in Istanbul, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places İbrahim Ethem in Muş as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1889 to 1905 every annual entry places İbrahim Ethem in Erzurum, the birthplace, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1894/95 in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) and from 1904/05 as Mufettis Vekili.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 1,060 in 1904/05, as Mufettis Vekili in Erzurum, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
