Life#
Mustafa İhsan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mustafa İhsan also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1883/84, at about 19, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Mustafa İhsan in Yeni camii postanesi as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), where the entries run to 1891/92. From 1892 to 1909 the annual entries place Mustafa İhsan in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru), from 1898/99 as an assistant director (Müdür Muavini).
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 2,000 in 1907/08, the peak, as Müdür Muavini in Istanbul, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 26 years of salary come to 346,320 kuruş, 2.3 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
