Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Sliven (İslimiye) in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Rıza also wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
At about 16, in 1879/80, Ali Rıza began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Servia (Serfiçe), with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 280 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Ali Rıza in Servia as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Ali Rıza to Kozani (Kozana), Servia and Neapoli (Nasliç) from 1885 to 1890, with a rise to a post in the Belediye Kitabeti in 1885/86, then back to Kozani from 1890 to 1892. Next came Alaçam from 1892 to 1903. The last posts were in Trabzon from 1903 to 1906, with a rise to a post in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi).
Pay rose from 280 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 600 in 1905/06, in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Trabzon, when two in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
