Life#
Born in Sliven (İslimiye) in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Necmettin Efendi was the child of a clerk (katip). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Necmettin also wrote French as well as Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1891/92, Necmettin began work in Rethymno (Resmo), with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Necmettin in Rethymno as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1897/98. Necmettin then moved to Heraklion in 1898/99 and Thessaloniki in 1899/1900, then Kuşadası from 1900 to 1905. The last posts were in Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç) from 1905 to 1907.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 400 in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Kuşadası, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
