Life#
Born in Sliven (İslimiye) in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Huseyin Husnu Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 25, in 1879/80, Huseyin Husnu began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. From 1879/80 to 1894/95 every annual entry places Huseyin Husnu in Istanbul, with four changes of title, from policeman (Polis) to police commissioner, second class (2. Sınıf Polis Komiseri) in 1891/92.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 650 in 1891/92, as 2. Sınıf Polis Komiseri in Istanbul, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1894/95.
