Life#
Born in Grevena (Grebene) in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Kadri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Kadri also wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Work began in Neapoli (Nasliç) in 1880/81, at about 14, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Kadri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Serres (Siroz). Next came Bitola (Manastır) from 1885 to 1890, then Kozani (Kozana), Kastoria (Kesriye) and Siceste from 1890 to 1894. Kadri then moved back to Kozani from 1894 to 1902. The last post was in Livadi in 1902/03.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 600 in 1894/95, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in Kozani, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 113,400 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
