Life#
Born in Antakya in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Ziya Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. At about 16, in 1882/83, Ziya began work in Antakya, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Ziya in Osmaniye as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1885/86. The annual lists then follow Ziya to Aleppo (Halep), Anamur and Kifri (Salahiye) from 1886 to 1890, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1889/90. The last post was in Basra in 1893/94.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 650 in 1889/90, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Kifri, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1893/94. Ziya probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Antakyalı devlet memurları, 1879 - 1909" by NAZİR ÇETİN (2015) (the name and the birthplace agree).
