Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1838/39 (AH 1254) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ali Rıza began work in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) in 1865/66, at about 27, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Ali Rıza as Bascavus in Afyonkarahisar, where the entries run to 1891/92. Next came Osmaneli (Lefke) from 1892 to 1894, then Adapazarı from 1894 to 1900. The last post was in Edremit in 1900/01.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1865/66, as Bascavus in Afyonkarahisar, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 36 years pay ended below where it began, 300 kuruş against 500; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low.
