Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Hasan Tahsin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Hasan Tahsin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1888/89, Hasan Tahsin began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1890/91 to 1905/06 places Hasan Tahsin in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), from 1903/04 in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 250 in 1905/06, in the Sevk Kalemi in Istanbul, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 17,700 kuruş, 25 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
Career and salary#
