Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Mehmet Nazif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Nazif began work in Istanbul in 1886/87, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with Mehmet Nazif as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1902/03. The last post was in Mabeyni humayun in 1903/04.
