Life

Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Bilecik in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Hasan Tahsin also wrote French as well as Turkish.

Work began in Bursa in 1903/04, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1905/06, places Hasan Tahsin in Gemlik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Hudavendigar in 1906/07.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Gemlik, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. Hasan Tahsin probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Osmanlı Devletinde görev yapan Bilecikli devlet ..." by MEHMET GEYİK (2022) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree).
