Life

Ali Mazhar Efendi was born in Samsun in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a court official (mahkeme memuru). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Ali Mazhar also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Ali Mazhar began work in Bafra in 1903/04, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place Ali Mazhar in Trabzon as a fair-copy clerk (Mübeyyiz).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1907/08, as Mübeyyiz in Trabzon, when 28 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Samsunlu devlet memurları (1879-1909)" by MERVE ÖZİNAN (2026) probably refers to Ali Mazhar, since the name, the birthplace and the birth year agree.
