Life#
Born in Adana in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Abdülcelal Efendi was the child of a court official (mahkeme memuru). Mehmet Abdülcelal had nine years of schooling, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi), wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1902/03, Mehmet Abdülcelal began work in Adana, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1904/05, places Mehmet Abdülcelal in Adana, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Mersin in 1906/07.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to 400 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Mersin, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less.
