Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, YORGİ JORJ ESBİYADİ EFENDİ was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); YORGİ JORJ ESBİYADİ also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 26, in 1901/02, YORGİ JORJ ESBİYADİ began work in Beyoğlu, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 800 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places YORGİ JORJ ESBİYADİ in Basra as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last posts were in Adana from 1904 to 1906.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 800 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Basra, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
