Life#
Mustafa Şükrü Efendi was born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (rüsumat memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Izmir in 1902/03, at about 27, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 220 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Mustafa Şükrü in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Izmir, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 220 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Izmir, when 13 per cent of paid officials earned less.
