Life

Born in Skopje (Üsküp) in 1884/85 (AH 1302), Hüzeyin Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüzeyin Hüsnü also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 16, in 1901/02, Hüzeyin Hüsnü began work in Istib, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Hüzeyin Hüsnü in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Štip (İştip).

The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to 250 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Štip, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 8,400 kuruş, 50 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
