Life#
Born in Skopje (Üsküp) in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Zeki Efendi was the child of a gendarme (jandarma). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin Zeki also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1903/04, Hüseyin Zeki began work in Skopje, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1905/06, places Hüseyin Zeki in Sivas as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Trabzon in 1907/08.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to 400 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Sivas, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08. Hüseyin Zeki probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Kayıtlarına göre Üsküp doğumlu memurlar" by HALENUR DİLOĞLU (2021) (the name and the birthplace agree).
