Life#
Born in Bayt al-Faqih (Beytülfakih) in 1884/85 (AH 1302), Hasan Hilmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Hilmi also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Beytulfakih in 1901/02, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Hasan Hilmi in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Yemen.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to 600 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Yemen, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
