Life

Mehmet Cemalettin Efendi was born in Maarat al-Numan (Maarretünnuman) in 1885/86 (AH 1303) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi).

At about 20, in 1906/07, Mehmet Cemalettin began work in Yemen, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1906/07, places Mehmet Cemalettin in Yemen as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Sana'a (Sana) in 1908/09. The farthest post, Yemen, lay about 2,400 km from Maarat al-Numan, and fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
