Life#
Arif Efendi was born in Sandıklı in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Arif also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1903/04, Arif began work in Konya, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1907/08, places Arif in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Ereğli from 1908 to 1911 and Ulukışla in 1911.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1907/08 to 500 in 1911, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Ulukışla, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 18,000 kuruş, 71 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1911.
