Life#
Born in Yemen in 1883/84 (AH 1301), Mehmet Haşim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an accountant of a sub-province (sancak muhasebecisi). Mehmet Haşim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1899/1900, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1905/06 places Mehmet Haşim in the same post, Sehir Posta Memuru, in Istanbul. The farthest post, Istanbul, lay about 3,200 km from Yemen, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Sehir Posta Memuru in Istanbul, when 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 3,600 kuruş, 21 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
