Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Bahaeddin Efendi was the child of an official of the Public Debt Administration (düyun-ı umumiye memuru). Mehmet Bahaeddin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1903/04, at about 19, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1907/08 places Mehmet Bahaeddin in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the Muhasebe Kalemi, from 1904/05 as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru) and from 1906/07 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to a peak of 300 in 1906/07, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when one in four paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 11,160 kuruş, 43 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
