Life

Aleksandros Angilidis Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Aleksandros Angilidis also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.

Work began in Istanbul in 1902/03, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1903/04 and 1904/05, place Aleksandros Angilidis in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the Mesalihi Kalemi.
