Life

Mustafa Hayri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Hayri also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 20, in 1903/04, Mustafa Hayri began work in Istanbul, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Mustafa Hayri in the same office, control office (Kontrol Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 50 kuruş a month in 1903/04, in the Kontrol Kalemi in Istanbul, when fewer than 1 per cent of paid officials earned less.
