Life#
Ahmet Nazım Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a deputy judge (naib). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi). In all Ahmet Nazım knew six languages, Arabic, Persian and Turkish in writing and Albanian, Bosnian and Bulgarian in speech; 8 of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 21, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 80 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Ahmet Nazım as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1898/99. The lists have no entry for 1899 to 1902. The last posts were in Erdek and Balıkesir from 1902 to 1909 and Istanbul again in 1909/10, with a rise to a post in the Mesalihi Kalemi in 1902/03 and to Tadati Hayvanat in 1905/06.
The salary went from 80 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 800 in 1905/06, the peak, as Tadati Hayvanat in Balıkesir, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
