Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Mehmet Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Tevfik had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1888/89, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Istanbul, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1894/95, to 1899/1900, every annual entry places Mehmet Tevfik in the same office, sorting room (Tefrik Odası), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
