Life#
Born in Sofia (Sofya) in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Süleyman Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Süleyman began work in Edirne in 1885/86, at about 22, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Süleyman in Edirne as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1900/01, with a rise to a post in the sorting room (Tefrik Odası) in 1889/90. The last posts were in Thessaloniki in 1901/02, as a postal official (Posta Memuru) and Edirne again in 1902/03.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 500 in 1901/02, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Thessaloniki, when half the paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. Over 18 years the salaries add up to 77,400 kuruş, 71 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned.
