Life#
Karabet Diyon Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1837/38 (AH 1253), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a special school (Mekteb-i Mahsusa). In all Karabet Diyon knew four languages, French, Greek (Rum), Italian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Karabet Diyon began work in Istanbul in 1868/69, at about 31, paid from the start, on 333 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 31 or older. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places Karabet Diyon in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a postal official (Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1878, with a rise to Sehir Postalari Mudur Muavini in 1872/73. Karabet Diyon then moved to Galata from 1878 to 1887, then Beşiktaş from 1887 to 1895. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1896 to 1899.
The salary went from 333 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 1,000 in 1876/77, the peak, as Sehir Postalari Mudur Muavini in Istanbul, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 30 years of salary come to 261,024 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
