Life#
Galip Efendi was born in Yemen in 1880/81 (AH 1298), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Galip also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Acre (Akka) in 1902/03, at about 21, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Galip in Acre as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Acre, about 2,150 km from Yemen, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 285 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Acre, when one in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
