Life#
Muharrem Sıtkı Efendi was born in Gjakova (Yakova) in 1882/83 (AH 1300), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Muharrem Sıtkı also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1900/01, Muharrem Sıtkı began work in Berane, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1904/05, places Muharrem Sıtkı in Gjakova, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Berane from 1906 to 1909, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to a peak of 540 in 1906/07, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Berane, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
