Life#
Hüseyin Avni Efendi was born in Gjakova (Yakova) in 1878/79 (AH 1296), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin Avni also wrote Turkish and spoke Albanian, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration). Few officials knew Albanian; only 18 of the 5,211 officials did.
At about 18, in 1897/98, Hüseyin Avni began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Prizren, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Hüseyin Avni as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Prizren, where the entries run to 1902/03. Next came Pristina (Priştine) from 1903 to 1906. The last entry, for 1906/07, names Hüseyin Avni as a soldier (Asker), with no place.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to 400 in 1906/07, the peak, as Asker, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. Hüseyin Avni received a rank (rütbe) and a medal. A note in the workbook reads: "1321 zecren asker edilmesinden dolayi aciga cikarildigi".
