Life#
Born in Gjakova (Yakova) in 1878 (AH 1295), Salih Selami Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Salih Selami also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1895/96, Salih Selami began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Çanakkale, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Salih Selami as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Çanakkale, where the entries run to 1898/99. Salih Selami then moved to Beyoğlu from 1900 to 1903. The last entry, for 1903/04, names Salih Selami as a soldier (Asker), with no place.
