Life

Born in Ibradi in 1881/82 (AH 1299), İzzet Ramazan Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 18, in 1900/01, İzzet Ramazan began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Konya, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places İzzet Ramazan in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Karaburun in 1904/05 and Acre (Akka) in 1906/07.

Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to a peak of 300 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Acre, when one in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
