Life#
Born in Elbistan in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Rıza Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Rıza also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ali Rıza began work in Kadıköy in 1897/98, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1905/06 places Ali Rıza in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Thessaloniki (Selanik).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 9,000 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Elbistanlı memurlar" by ŞEYMA BÜLBÜL (2025) probably refers to Ali Rıza, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree.
