Life#
Hüseyin Şevki Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1837/38 (AH 1253) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at the Military School (Harbiye Mektebi). Of the 5,146 officials with a school, 6 studied at Harbiye Mektebi.
Hüseyin Şevki began work in Istanbul in 1865/66, at about 28, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Hüseyin Şevki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Volos (Golos). Next came Ioannina (Yanya), Nesebar (Misivri) and Pomorie (Ahyolu) from 1869 to 1877, then Şarköy from 1878 to 1885. Hüseyin Şevki then moved to Yano and Yerepetra from 1887 to 1892, then Paramythia (Aydonat) from 1892 to 1902. The last post was in Damascus (Şam) in 1902/03. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 600 in 1887/88, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Yano, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less.
