Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1837/38 (AH 1253), Mehmet Cemalettin Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Matbahi Amire Muduru". Mehmet Cemalettin was taught by a private teacher.
Unpaid work as a mülazım (apprentice) lasted one year. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, names Mehmet Cemalettin as Kapikethudasi, with no place, with a rise to Ticaret Mahkemesi in 1869/70 and to Ticaret Bahriye Azasi in 1878/79. From 1887 to 1889 the annual entries place Mehmet Cemalettin in Üsküdar.
