Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Ziyaettin Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Ziyaettin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1888/89, Mehmet Ziyaettin began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Mehmet Ziyaettin in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur). Mehmet Ziyaettin then moved to Babiali from 1890 to 1893. From 1893 to 1904 every annual entry places Mehmet Ziyaettin again in Istanbul, first in the council clerkship (Meclis Kitabeti), from 1894/95 in the Musevvit Kalemi.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 675 in 1901/02, the peak, in the Musevvit Kalemi in Istanbul, when three in four paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
