Life

Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Mustafa Haydar Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a governor of a sub-province (mutasarrıf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).

Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 18, paid from the start, on 40 kuruş a month. From 1889/90 to 1898/99 every annual entry places Mustafa Haydar in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the Muhasebe Kalemi, from 1893/94 in the Maas Kitabeti, from 1894/95 as a registry clerk (Mukayyit) and from 1898/99 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi).

The salary went from 40 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 1,800 in 1898/99, the peak, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak was 45 times the first salary, a rise matched by 38 of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more. The final annual entry is for 1898/99. Mustafa Haydar received a rank (rütbe).
