Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279), Mehmet Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1880/81, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 95 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1882/83 to 1906/07 places Mehmet Tevfik in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1891/92 in the Musevvit Kalemi.
The salary went from 95 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 550 in 1901/02, the peak, in the Musevvit Kalemi in Istanbul, when two in three paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 102,840 kuruş, 69 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
