Life

Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Louros (Loros) in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Mehmet Tevfik also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.

At about 14, in 1897/98, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Louros, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Mehmet Tevfik in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Kastoria (Kesriye).

The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 500 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kastoria, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 15,000 kuruş, 67 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
