Life#
Salih Saffet Efendi was born in Trebin in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a mayor (belediye reisi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Salih Saffet also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 25, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Salih Saffet as Muvassil in Beyoğlu. Salih Saffet then moved to Eskişehir in 1896/97, as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), then Galata from 1897 to 1905. The last posts were in Koprubasi from 1905 to 1907.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 750 in 1896/97, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Eskişehir, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 540 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
