Life

Born in Istanbul in 1882/83 (AH 1300), Ali Nurettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Mubayaat Memuru". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Nurettin also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 22, in 1905/06, Ali Nurettin began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1906/07, with Ali Nurettin in the sorting room (Tefrik Odası) in Istanbul, the birthplace. The last post was in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1908/09, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru).

The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1906/07 to 500 in 1908/09, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
