EMİN HASAN EFENDİ was born in Istanbul in 1885/86 (AH 1303) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); EMİN HASAN also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Beyoğlu in 1900/01, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1902/03, to 1904/05, every annual entry places EMİN HASAN in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Beyoğlu.

Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 140 in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 4,800 kuruş, 28 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
