Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1888/89 (AH 1306), Nesim Efendi came from the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father's occupation was "Fabrika Memuru". Schooling took seven years, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi); Nesim also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1899/1900, at about 11, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 11 or younger. Every annual entry from 1902/03 to 1906/07 places Nesim in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Beyoğlu.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 250 in 1906/07, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 12,600 kuruş, 44 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
