Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1888/89 (AH 1306), Ali Hayri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Hayri also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 14, in 1902/03, Ali Hayri began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places Ali Hayri in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru). The last posts were in Beyoğlu from 1903 to 1907, with a rise to registry clerk (Mukayyit).
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to 350 in 1905/06, the peak, as Mukayyit in Beyoğlu, when one in three paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 280 kuruş. In all, five years of salary come to 15,360 kuruş, 54 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
