Life

Born in Istanbul in 1883/84 (AH 1301), Ananyan Ropen Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a teacher (muallim). Ananyan Ropen had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.

At about 15, in 1898/99, Ananyan Ropen began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1902/03 and 1903/04, place Ananyan Ropen in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
