Life#
Yahya Naci Efendi was born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Yahya Naci began work in Istanbul in 1900/01, at about 22, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1906/07 places Yahya Naci in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in İzmit.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in İzmit, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 14,400 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Kerküklü devlet adamları" by ORHAN ABDULBASIT ANWER ANWER (2021) probably refers to Yahya Naci, since the name and the birthplace agree.
