Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Mehmet Cemil Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Mehmet Cemil had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 14, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Mehmet Cemil in Beyoğlu as Muvassil. Next came a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1897 to 1901, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Bilecik from 1901 to 1905 and İzmit in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 440 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in İzmit, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 11 years the salaries add up to 32,040 kuruş, 49 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
