Life#
İshak Nisyon Amon Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at the Kamanto Mektebi.
İshak Nisyon Amon began work in Beyoğlu in 1886/87, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places İshak Nisyon Amon in Beyoğlu as a chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru), where the entries run to 1889/90. İshak Nisyon Amon then moved to Edessa (Vodina) from 1890 to 1893, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1890/91, then back to Beyoğlu from 1893 to 1899. The last posts were in Trablusagarp from 1899 to 1902.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 900 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Trablusagarp, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
