Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Jewish (Musevi) community, Behor Badur Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at the Kamanto Mektebi.
Behor Badur began work in Niš (Niş) in 1869/70, at about 16, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Behor Badur in Niš as a chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru), where the entries run to 1875/76. The annual lists then follow Behor Badur to Sofia in 1876/77, then Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1877 to 1882. Behor Badur then moved to Ardos in 1891/92 and Jerusalem in 1892/93, then Beirut (Beyrut) from 1893 to 1902. The last post was in Jerusalem again in 1905/06. Entries spanning 38 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 600 kuruş a month in 1869/70, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Niš, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 25 years pay ended below where it began, 500 kuruş against 600; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
